Harris County Texas
Harris County, one of 254 counties in the state of Texas, was founded in 1836 by a settler named John R. Harris. It was originally named Harrisburg, but was later changed to Harris in 1839. With a 2007 estimated population of over 4 million and the third largest county in the United States, Harris county has the second fast growth rate among the 10 largest counties in the country. Geographically, the county is spread over 1788 square miles which includes 49 square miles of water. The city of Houston, named after General Sam Houston, is the county seat.
The county government structure was defined by the state of Texas constitution. It is made up of a county judge, four commissioners, constables, Justice of the Peace, Tax Assessor - Collector, Surveyor, Attorney, Treasurer, Sheriff and Board of School Trustees. All terms are 4 years except for the school trustees which are 6 year terms. The county judge position is similar to the mayor of a city.
Harris county and the city of Houston are home to 10 major colleges/universities, 36 museums, The Johnson Space Center, two airports, several professional sports teams and the Texas Medical Center, the worlds largest medical complex.
Forty-one towns and cities reside in Harris county. Some of them are unincorporated and therefore serviced by the county. Houston, Tomball, Spring, Cypress, Humble and Kingwood are some of the major cities and communities in Harris county.
There is a strong growth rate in Harris county with approximately 25% of the population employed in the manufacturing sector or retail trade. Major companies that call Harris county and Houston their home are Continental Airlines, Hewlett-Packard and Academy Sports and Outdoor plus major oil and gas companies.
